Disney's Mousekeeping

If you're new to Disney, you might not know that housekeeping at a Disney Resort goes by a different name... Mousekeeping. Clever, right?

Well, we love Mousekeeping. While we try to keep a pretty tidy hotel room when we travel anyway, we do appreciate them coming in each day to freshen things up for us. Things like taking the trash out, making the beds, replenishing those fun little soaps and shampoos, and getting new towels. Sometimes it's just adding a little touch to an already clean room.

Everyone has a different opinion on tipping Mouse/housekeeping. Some tip, some don't. Some tip daily, some tip at the end. I'm not here to tell you what you should do about any of it. That's a personal choice :-) To each their own, but we're a family who tips daily just in case we get different Mousekeepers throughout our stay. Like I said, we keep things pretty straight around the room, so we usually leave $1 per person, plus $1. Then at the end we leave a little extra to the person who is doing the full clean once we leave.

Mousekeepers are sometimes known to leave some fun surprises in your room while you're away like towel animals or rearranging little lovies.

My kids like to do something special for our Mousekeepers in hopes to motivate them for a little fun. It's not a guarantee, but either way, my kids enjoy doing something nice for the people helping to take care of us while we're away. We like to think it might bring a smile to their day at least.

Those were some certificates we'd found at the Dollar Store when my daughter was young. She colored them and left one each day in an envelope I colored. We've done things like that and notes, and this last trip my daughter decided to draw some of her favorite characters on our tip envelopes. There were a couple I really wanted to keep, but they weren't for me :-(
She did them all free-hand, too!!

Well, they paid off. We got some fun at Art of Animation for my mother-in-law's birthday.

We also got some nice treats when we switched to Coronado Springs.

Again, this isn't a post to encourage you to tip or do anything special. I just wanted to share a little something my kiddos do to get ready for our trip and spread a little magic of their own while we're away. Hope you enjoyed!

(Almost) Wordless Wednesday: Tower of Terror

I don't know that Tower of Terror is my favorite ride at Disney, but it rates right up there at the top of the list somewhere... in May 2011 I had the pleasure of riding with a newbie, my husband's Grandma. (She could have outdone us all at Disney!!)

Below is our ride photo. We were in the top row on the left. You couldn't see not one of our faces because each of them were blocked by an arm or a hand from the row in front of us. (You should be able to double-click on the image to enlarge it to see better...)

Boy, would I have loved to have seen her face! She had a pretty good hold of mine and Dad's arms during the drop, but when she got of she said she'd enjoyed herself! I'm so glad I got to experience her first Disney trip with her! So much fun!!

Almost Wordless Wednesday: Wish I Were There!

I don't know how things are where you are, but here, there's snow on the ground and it's bitter cold! I want to be somewhere playing in the water under the warm sun, basking in all its glory. Well, not just "somewhere"... I wish I were at Caribbean Beach Resort's theme pool "Fuentes del Morro" at Old Port Royale. Wouldn't that just kick the blahs away?!

Throwback Thursday: Meeting Mickey

I've been looking through some old photos lately and found a few that still invoke tears at the sight of them- happy tears, of course! So, I was inspired for a Throwback Thursday post. Let's go back to the first time my little guy Colten met Mickey Mouse.

His first visit was at two years old. Some thought he was a bit too young to fully understand going to Disney and said he’d forget two days after we’d return, but that didn’t stop me from wanting to take him! I still remember sitting in a restaurant on Mother’s Day and the waitress came up to check on us… Colten, out of nowhere, tells her (and all those in close proximity to us) that he was “going on a plane to go see Mickey Mouse!” In days following he’d tell everyone he encountered... And who said he didn’t understand it?!

Well we made it to Disney. We met some characters here and there, around Epcot, on Main Street. We even had a breakfast at Chef Mickey’s. I thought for sure he’d be ecstatic meeting Mickey there in the restaurant, right at our own table. To be honest though, he didn’t want anything to do with him. Don’t get me wrong, he had fun. He really enjoyed seeing Pluto, but the long awaited meeting with Mickey wasn’t what I had hoped it was going to be.

Later that very evening the kids and I had a last minute reservation at Tony’s Town Square Restaurant. Having shown up for our reservation a bit early, but not early enough to really venture off we decided to wait the 20 minutes to visit Mickey & Minnie again.

When we finally made it to Mickey’s room, we were the last in with a few families ahead of us. We could see Mickey as soon as we walked in and Bubby’s smile seemed to get a bit bigger. Mickey & Minnie were taking their time with each family, which was just fine with me. As we waited Colten began to get more excited. Aside from Donald and Pluto, he kind of liked the characters more from a distance, and after the meeting with Mickey that morning was a bit of a letdown, I wasn’t expecting much. We rounded the banister and had one family visiting with M&M and one in front of us. I tried keeping the kids occupied a bit longer by taking photos with the “Magician Mickey prop” while we waited.

All of a sudden Colten just couldn’t wait to see Mickey any longer. He was giggling and yelling for Mickey, trying to get his attention. I was completely surprised by this. I tried and tried to get him to calm down. He wasn’t crying or anything just very excited and I didn’t want him intruding on another family’s time. It was taking all I had to keep him back. Thankfully there’s a little bit of a wall there, or he may have flown right into the other family’s photo! The family in front of us was getting a big kick out him (and me trying to contain his excitement, too, I’m sure).

As the folks were wrapping things up, the family in front of us told me to go ahead. “Oh, I wouldn’t dream of it,” I’d told them, “we could wait.” They laughed out loud at that! They thought it was adorable how ecstatic he seemed to be, and insisted that since they’re children were older they could wait a few more minutes. Their kids even encouraged us to go ahead! I was blown away by their generosity!

Just as I thought, once we were up my little guy got shy. He didn’t run to Mickey as he’d made out that he would only minutes before. Instead, he wanted to be held. Big sister went ahead. She had her moment with the famous duo as we inched closer. Tessa introduced her little brother to Mickey and he could tell he had a shy one on his hands.

He started with a little tickle and the wall came tumbling down. To hear my son giggle like that, and see this huge smile on his face… I’ll never forget it. It honestly brings a tear as I write this. He just laughed and laughed. That smile could have gone on for daayyys!!

I’m not sure what the difference was from that morning to that evening, but this was the reaction I was expecting. This was the moment I was waiting to see. After all the times he’d told everyone he’d be meeting his pal Mickey, I could only picture it in my head. Never did that picture turn out as great as these!

To this day at age 7 he still recalls things from trip specifically, not just the ones after. Maybe not every kid is like that, but even if he does eventually forget- I won't! And these trips are as much for us as the parents as they are for the children. Creating these moments and memories are worth it all!

If you have multiple children and are putting off that trip until the youngest gets a little bigger, I encourage you not to wait! Go ahead and go. Each child will get to experience something different at each age. And you'll get to witness all those precious smiles and giggles. It's just magical.

I'd love to hear about any special character meetings your children have had... or what characters is your child looking most forward to meeting? Please share in the comments below or on my Facebook page.

Need a Filling Snack at Animal Kingdom?

You're making your way through Animal Kingdom. It's hot and the park is huge! You need energy, nourishment. It's too hot to eat a big meal, but you want something more than a granola bar or an apple... Fear not! I have the perfect solution!

Head over to Yak & Yeti Local Food Cafes for some Chicken Fried Rice!

Yak & Yeti Local Food Cafes is the Counter Service to the right of Yak & Yeti Restaurant (Table Service). Coming from Kilimanjaro Safaris going to Expedition Everest Yak & Yeti LFC will be on your left. Simply walk up, place your order, and take a seat at one of the tables in the vicinity. There are a few tables directly across from Yak & Yeti LFC that are in the shade, but more seating can be found to the right of the building (in direct sun).

Anyway, back to the important stuff- the food! Yak & Yeti LFC offers Asian inspired entrees ranging from $8.99-$10.99, such as Honey Chicken and Tariyaki Beef Bowl, among other things. Their kids meals are more of your typical American fare though.

What we enjoyed though was their side of chicken fried rice. It comes in the typical Asian to-go box, packed full! Tessa, Colten and I all shared a box when they were smaller, and while we did eat it all, there was plenty. Now that's they're a little bigger we typically share 2 to a order. This was the perfect alternative to a heavy meal on such a hot day!

Not only was it just a good snack, it tasted great, too!

The side of chicken fried rice was $3.99, which is not bad at all for the generous serving. Even better though, we used a snack credit on the Dining Plan!! Personally, I thought this was a much better use of the credits than say, a bag of chips?

If you're looking to save money eating at Disney this is a great way to do it. This "side" is a meal in itself! If you're really hungry I'd say it wouldn't be hard to eat it all on your own (or take back to the room for later). With Disney's generous portions though, for those less hungry, it can easily be shared between two adults, or in my case, one adult and two kiddos. At $4, or 1 snack credit, this is an awesome yet inexpensive meal!

Good to the last bite!

(Check out that hot, sleepy stare!)

Mmm... now I have a craving. Guess I'll just have to hop a flight to MCO :-)

A Toddler's Fear of Rides at Disney

Recently I was asked about taking a 2 year old on certain rides at Disney, and seeing how my little guy, Colten, was 2 on his first trip, I definitely had some insight here. I thought it might be something worth sharing via the blog as well to possibly help others as they plan their future trips with little ones.

Here's a recap of some of the rides I thought to be okay for a 2 year old at the time... and how he reacted.

Pirates of the Caribbean

Our first ride of the kids' first trip to Disney was Pirates of the Caribbean. We entered the queue and followed the scent of the water to our waiting boat. We were all able to sit together, in the first row. Colten wasn't quite sure what to think. We entered the dark tunnel and, he got a little nervous. This was a new face for us, so I had to snap the picture.

I had completely forgotten about the "little dip" at the beginning which seemed to take us all by surprise. More surprising though was that Bubby didn't seem to mind it. Once we made it through that and the ride opened up a bit, he was fine. He loves anything to do with pirates so he really got into it. There are some loud scenes, but all in all, it was a good experience.

Haunted Mansion

Well, for whatever reason I remembered Haunted Mansion being rather amusing, like funny Ha-Ha amusing, so I thought it wouldn't be any big deal to take Colten on it. He did fine on Pirates of the Caribbean, after that darkened tunnel and little dip so why wouldn't he do okay with Haunted Mansion?

I'll tell you why... because it is nothing like what I had somehow remembered in my head. I must have come up with some alternative universe or something where the ghosts were telling jokes or something. Don't ask me how or why...

Bubby did okay as we entered. The stretching room didn't scare him like I thought it might, so I thought we were home free. It wasn't until we had gotten into our DoomBuggies and were headed through that first "hallway" with the lightning in the windows, the spooky voice, the doors and pictures that I started to question what in world I was thinking. The ghosts and skeletons were much creepier than I had remembered. (What was I picturing, cute chubby baby-like ghosts or something? I don't know.)

Not only was it dark and creepy, but it was very, very loud. Talk about over-stimulating! It was all just way too much. So, we're not a minute in and already I'm feeling like the world's worst mother. Oh, and the ride is super long, which didn't help a bit.

Yes, yes, he made it out alive, but he was skeptical of every ride after that for the rest of our trip!

Muppet*Vision 3D

Muppet*Vision 3D is a 3D enhanced theater show at Disney's Hollywood Studios which I thought would really be a big hit with Colten. I mean, it is the Muppets, after all. He loved the waiting area, checking out the little show on the TVs and all the props. He loved getting his glasses and playing with them. He didn't even mind going into the theater. However, once the show started and the 3D antics really began, specifically when "the world's first computer-generated Muppet", Waldo C. Graphic tells you how it's funny that everyone think he's talking to them, but really he's just talking to you and his nose elongates and almost bumps right into your own nose... Bubby was ready to hit the door. So beware, the show may be just fine, but the 3D effects may be a bit too much for little one. Most may be okay to stay and watch the show without the glass, but my little guy had to leave.

The Seas with Nemo and Friends

Another ride that seemed a bit sketchy to him at first (thanks to Mama here) was The Seas with Nemo and Friends.  Those "clamobiles" were a bit too similar to the DoomBuggies and he was a bit leery of getting in. He immediately went into defense mode, seen here:

For whatever reason, he was never ll that into Nemo, so he didn't really get excited at the sight of Dory or Nemo. While those hands never came down, his features softened, and you could tell he was okay. He did say he "liked the fish" when he got off, but I'm sure he'd have enjoyed it much more without my Haunted Mansion fiasco.

Jungle Cruise

Colten loves boats and loves animals (see where I'm going with this?), so what better attraction than Jungle Cruise to appeal to him? He started to get a bit anxious waiting in line, especially overhearing the kids behind us talk about a big snake. We were the last to board a crowded boat, and Bub wasn't too sure about this...

Once we got going though and he realized there wasn't really anything to be scared of, he started to enjoy the nice, relaxing boat ride. He really liked pointing out the animals. His favorites were the elephants playing in the water. This may have even ended up being one of his favorites.

What can we learn from this post?
  • Haunted Mansion is too spooky, loud, scary and over-stimulating for a two year old (or at least mine anyway)
  • 3D effects, like those in Muppet*Vision 3D, may be too much for little ones
  • Some children may be nervous getting on certain rides (even without previous bad experience), but it's okay to take them anyway because it may turn out that they really like it (although I wouldn't recommend pushing through for Haunted Mansion...)

For the record, my daughter Tessa thinks Haunted Mansion rocks, and she and I had to ride it several more times over the course of our trip. She was 5 at the time. To this day it's still her favorite non-thrill ride.

Were your kids frightened by any rides at Disney? Any they were scared to go on but ended up liking? Do you have a tot who liked Haunted Mansion? I'd love to hear from you.

Almost Wordless Wednesday: Who's That Doggy in the Window?

Disney puts so much into everything they do, right down to the little details. They go above and beyond anything we could imagine and it is so evident throughout the parks, resorts, shopping, movies, and so on. If it has the Disney name on it, you can bet a lot of time went into making it special!

I know the quality of the photo isn't great, but this was one detail I loved! When the kids and I ate at Tony's Town Square Restaurant we were seated near this "window" which featured the silhouhette of someone you might recognize. This truly made me smile, and the kids were very intrigued. It's those little details that truly make the experience all the more special!
